Why Kshama Sawant’s Call for a Higher Minimum Wage Will Fail the Working Class

For those of you who might not know who she is, Kshama Sawant is a city council member in Seattle, WA.  Sawant’s stardom came about shortly after she began radically proclaiming that she would bring about a $15.00 an hour minimum wage in Seattle (if elected). Needless to say, with that sort of a promise, she was elected by the working class people of Washington’s most densely populated city. What amazes me the most is not that Kshama Sawant is crazy enough to think a $15 dollar an hour minimum wage is somehow sustainable, it’s that so many low-income earners support her efforts and do not see that this will land them on the unemployment line.  If your level of skills as a worker does not add up to $15 an hour, raising the minimum wage to that will not help you; it will cost you your job.  The employment…
